“We’re going to bring back the spirit of ’75,
when we were rubbing sesame oil everywhere, on everyone”
Sesame oil has long been known for its nutty taste. Traditionally used in stir-fry meals it is now being re-introduced to the west for its spiritual component, which is to rub it on your arms before beginning your spiritual practice, whatever it may be.
India and Asia have long known about the process of rubbing sesame oil on your arms to heighten awareness and cultivate compassion for all sentient beings, but the practice is largely unknown to us in the states.
The class will show you the proper technique for rubbing the oil and how much to use. Some of the benefits of rubbing sesame oil on your arms are:
- Meditative warm arms (“mwarms”)
- Compassionate hands
- Healer elbows
The class is run by heterosexual partners, Jan and Tracy Unger. Each have been rubbing sesame oil on their arms for over twenty years and actually met in a health food store in Miami, FL in the ‘70s when sesame oil was hitting its culinary peak.
“We’re going to bring back the spirit of ’75, when we were rubbing sesame oil everywhere, on everyone,” says Tracy. “All of our houses were carpeted and that feel of naked bodies covered in sesame oil rolling around on carpet was luxurious to say the least. We want to give that back to the public.”
“We only know about sesame oil when it relates to cooking tofu or tempeh or vegetables, maybe to season an Asian salad of some kind, but rubbing it on our arms is completely foreign. We’re going to remove the alien component and create a safe space for everyone in the class to rub sesame oil on their arms without judgment or fear,” adds Jan Unger.
