A happy life is something we all want, but seems to elude so many of us. Turns out, the answer to a happy life has to do with remembering what we did the day before.
You need not have done something inspiring the day before, you just have to remember what you did. Even if you did nothing, the act of remembering that you did nothing creates a positive neural pathway in the brain. We are thus chemically rewarded by remembering things that happened exactly one day before.
“A lot of people are trying to remember things from two or three or even four or five days prior to the current day they’re living,” says happiness expert, Raul Jørgensen, a Latin American Norwegian man, which isn’t apropos of this article, you just don’t see those very often and we thought we’d mention it. Anyway, remembering things from a long time ago is the worst thing we can do when it comes to our happiness, according to Jørgensen.
“Some people are remembering their childhoods or what happened to them last year,” says Jørgensen, “and this is absolutely terrible.” Though he fails to say exactly why it’s terrible, it’s important to believe him wholeheartedly.
If you find yourself feeling sad, the best thing to do would be to immediately remember something you did the day before. It can be as mundane as going to the bathroom. If you don’t feel happy right away, think of something else that happened the day before. And if you still don’t feel happy, recreate the entire previous day in your head. If you still don’t feel happy after that, then you’re probably thinking of the wrong day.
